Page 3 of 6 Mr. Thrifty Principle #2: Don’t get too creative. When in doubt, buy from the registry.
The second thing to keep in mind is to not try to be too creative when buying a thrifty wedding gift. Most couples register with several merchants for wedding gifts that they actuall want (Duh!). When in doubt, buy from the wedding registry. In a survey of recently married couples, most said that the worst wedding gifts that they received were “creative” gifts from unknown stores. The couples were left with unwanted gifts and had no way to return them. Mr. Thrifty received a few of these- the cheesy “kissing couple” statue that is already sitting on a shelf at Goodwill, the metal vine leave door hanging that goes nowhere in the Thrifty house, etc. If you want to give a different wedding gift, run your creative idea by the couple getting married. Otherwise, scour the wedding registries and pick something different from there. If you don’t know where the couple is registered, you can either ask or try some of the more typical online sites such as: www.Dillards.com, www.bedbathandbeyond.com, or www.potterybarn.com.
