Mr. Thrifty Tip #2: Shop using multiple sites such as Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz

In a recent survey, less than 20% of internet users knew that prices on airline tickets were not the same of the different travel websites. The fact is that airline ticket prices are different on different sites.  This is why it is important to check several sites like Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz if you really want the best deal. On a recent trip to Los Angeles, Mr. Thrifty found the “lowest” airline ticket fare of $500 round trip on Expedia and Travelocity. He found the same flights on Orbitz for $280—A big savings!

There are two main reasons that the airline ticket fares differ from site-to-site. The first is that the travel sites may have some sort of an inside relationship with a particular airline that gives them access to special fares that other sites may not have the ability to offer. The other reason why fares differ is that some travel sites will pre-buy a block of seats on a particular flight at a huge discount from the airline and then try to resell them for more. This is what happened on Mr. Thrifty’s Los Angeles trip. Orbitz probably bought a block of 10 airline tickets on the flight for $200 and then sold them on their site for $280. A nice profit for Orbitz (if they sold all of the seats) and a nice savings for Mr. Thrifty!
