Mr. Thrifty Tip #5: Sign up for the for email newsletters from the airlines or from SmartTravel

If you like to travel for fun, Mr. Thrifty recommends that you sign up for the email newsletters from the airlines or from a site like SmarterTravel.com. They will notify you of any airline ticket specials that pop up in your area and can be handy to find fun trips. Or you can search for last minute trips and airline tickets through Site59.com.

Another tool that Mr. Thrifty has been using lately is Southwest Airlines Ding! application. Ding! sits on Mr. Thrifty’s desktop and beeps whenever Southwest has a fare sale on airline tickets. Southwest also gives some specials to Ding! users only. It appears that Southwest has a Ding! offering everyday of the week. Great way to pick up some cheap tickets for future travel.

Good luck and happy flying…

Mr. Thrifty Update:  Since Mr. Thrifty wrote this article, he has had a chance to use Southwest Airline's "Ding" application a lot more.  It is a little bit frustrating to have to check what cities they are running their specials between, but it CAN save you some big bucks.  Today, Mr. Thrifty was able to score some airline tickets to fly home to his brothers wedding at a 40% discount over the typical plan-in-advance airline fare.  Well worth the effort.  If you have not used Ding and like SWA, Mr. Thrifty strongly recommends you download it!

Thank you Mr. Thrifty. The SideStep application is one that I had not been aware.
I like it as well!

I have also downloaded the ding application put out by Southwest. I have found a bunch of cheaper fares using it. Highly recommend if you can plan ahead.

It defitanley pays to shop around when buying arline tickets- even amoung the different travel websites. I found the same ticket between New York and LA to be $200 cheaper on Travelocity than it was on Orbitz or Expedia. Shop around!
