Supplemental Liability. This insurance can provide up to $1 million in protection from injuries, death or damage to someone else or their property. The idea here is that because you are not in your hometown that you may not be as familiar with the roads or driving conditions making it more likely that you might be the cause of an accident. This is where supplemental liability comes in to save the day. It will pay the damages that you did to everyone else. Typically supplemental liability runs from $9-14 per day.
Mr. Thrifty did some research on supplemental liability and found out that most people are covered for this through their own auto insurance policy. Also, if you are like Mr. Thrifty and have an umbrella insurance policy you are covered under this as well.
Should you buy this supplemental liability? Lots of debate here. Some rental car agents and sites recommend this supplemental liability even if you are covered so you “don’t have to file a claim under your own policy which could lead to premium increases.” While Mr. Thrifty is glad that the car rental companies care so much about Mr. Thrifty’s insurance rates, this argument holds about as much water as a spaghetti strainer. Even if you do not file a claim with your insurance company the accident will still end up in their databases. Mr. Thrifty’s only recommends supplemental liability if you have very low liability amounts on your auto insurance policy and want some additional coverage.
