Summary

Personal Effects Insurance.  This insurance covers the theft of personal items from the rental car.  Typically you will be changed $1-$4 per day for personal effect insurance.  Before even considering getting personal effects insurance, think though what you are going to have in the car with you.  If the most valuable thing you are bringing with you is the starter-set golf clubs you borrowed from your neighbor, then you probably don’t need personal effect insurance.  However, you may need personal effects insurance if you are bringing along your G4 Mac and videoing equipment.

Even if you have the need for personal effect insurance, you may not have to buy it from the car rental company.  Many people are already covered for stolen out of their car (even if is a rental car) through homeowner’s or renters insurance.  If you have this type of coverage, Mr. Thrifty says “No” to personal effect insurance coverage.
