Mr. Thrifty Principle #3: Go with a local company rather than a national brand

When you are getting quotes, consider if you want a local company or a national brand to do your move. If you moving someplace near your current home, you will generally be a lot better off going with a local moving company rather than a national brand (such as Bekins or Mayflower). National brands are generally just that- brands. They contract out with a local moving company and keep a percentage of the move. Mr. Thrifty has had much better luck with local companies who tend to be cheaper and care more about their local reputation than national movers.

Shameless Plug- if you live in Austin, TX, Mr. Thrifty recommends Minor Moving (512-288-4187, http://www.minormoving.com). Owner Jon Minor does a fantastic job on moves and does what it takes to make his customers happy.  Tell him that Mr. Thrifty sent you!

Shameless Warning- Do not use United Van Lines. On a move a couple of years ago Mr. Thrifty’s stuff arrived broken and with the different contractors pointing at each other as the cause of the breakage.  Bad Bad Bad experience!
